GeForce GTX 780 Pictured Some More


It turns out that NVIDIA's upcoming high-end graphics card, the GeForce GTX 780, is indeed based on the GK110 chip, and to the extant of featuring the same reference-design PCB and cooling solution as the GeForce GTX TITAN. Chinese portal IT168 posted press-shots of the card. If you overlook the "GTX 780" embossing on the cooler, half the number of memory chips, and another very subtle difference, you will easily mistake the GTX 780 for a GTX TITAN. 

Pictures reveal the card to feature an ASIC bearing the number "GK110-300-A1," which is rumored to feature 2,304 CUDA cores, 192 TMUs, 48 ROPs, and a 384-bit wide memory interface. Given that the card features just twelve 2 Gbit memory chips, the total memory amount should be 3 GB. The card is said to feature clock speeds of 863 MHz core, 902 MHz GPU Boost, and 6.00 GHz memory, which belts out 288 GB/s memory bandwidth. It draws power from a combination of 6-pin and 8-pin PCIe power connectors. The 4-way SLI-capable card gives out display from a pair of dual-link DVI, HDMI, and DisplayPort connectors.

EVGA GeForce GTX 670 FTW LE Detailed



EVGA's high-end air-cooled GeForce GTX 670 FTW graphics card, which launched with the rest of the GTX 670 lineup, is largely based on the GeForce GTX 680 NVIDIA-reference design, including its cooler and PCB, and features clock-speeds of 1006 MHz GPU and 6208 MHz memory. The company recently launched a newer SKU based on the same exact design, the EVGA GTX 670 FTW LE, which goes lighter on the clock speeds. The EVGA GTX 670 FTW LE (model: 02G-P4-2676-KR), features a GPU base clock of 941 MHz, GPU Boost clock of 1019 MHz, and 6008 MHz memory, which is still a notch above NVIDIA-reference speeds. It is priced at US $390.

Inno3D GeForce GTX 680 TwinFan Graphics Card Pictured


Over the weekend, Inno3D held a lavish GeForce GTX 680 launch event, in Hong Kong, even though it announced its GeForce GTX 680 products with other partners, on March 22. We know Inno3D has a custom-design liquid-cooled GTX 680 in the works, it obviously has an NVIDIA reference-design model, too; but at the launch event, Inno3D unveiled its third GTX 680 product, an air-cooled factory-overclocked model, called the Inno3D GeForce GTX 680 TwinFan.

HIS Announces its Radeon HD 7800 Series Graphics Cards, Including Three IceQ X Models

HIS kicked off its Radeon HD 7800 series with a trio of graphics cards under its coveted IceQ family. These include the HIS HD 7850 IceQ X, the HIS HD 7870 IceQ X, and HIS HD 7870 IceQ iTurbo. The first two use proven IceQ X cooling solutions that have been used on previous-generation graphics cards by HIS, which have just different cooler shroud color-scheme of black+silver. 

AMD "Tahiti" Successor is Codenamed "Tenerife"?


An AMD presentation slide was scored by OBR-Hardware, the site did not vouch for the authenticity of the slide, but reveals a new GPU codename, "Tenerife". The slide rings many bells. First, we know from a recent report by VR-Zone, that a new family of GPUs succeeding "Southern Islands" is codenamed something along the lines of "Sea Islands". Second, the source speculates the stream processor count of Tenerife to be 2304, which falls in line the "actual" stream processor count of Tahiti, that was revealed by a leaked company document belonging to Sapphire, which created some controversy in early January, which AMD later went on to quash.

Club 3D Announces GeForce GTX 560 Ti CoolStream with 2 GB Memory

Club 3D announced its newest performance-segment graphics card, the GTX 560 Ti CoolStream with 2 GB of GDDR5 memory (model: CGNX-XT5648). Based on the 40 nm GF-114 silicon, this card features 384 CUDA cores, and makes use of 2 GB of GDDR5 memory, double the standard memory amount, across a 256-bit wide memory interface. It sports a compact in-house PCB design by Club 3D, and is cooled by an in-house dual-fan cooling solution that makes use of heat pipes to convey heat through stacks of aluminum fins, which are then ventilated by two 80 mm fans.

Nvidia Quietly Intros First GeForce 600M graphics cards

Without so much of a stale press release, Nvidia has today outed its very first GeForce 600M series mobile graphics cards. Unfortunately, there's not much to get excited about as the cards in question, named GeForce GT 635M, GT 630M and 610M, are based on the 40nm GPUs already used by the GeForce 500M line.

We don't want to point any fingers but the fact is the GeForce GT 635M, GT 630M and 610M strike an undeniable resemblance to the GeForce GT 555M/550M, GT 540M and GT 520M, respectively. No worries, AMD has done something similar with the first few cards in the Radeon HD 7000M series.

Inno3D Intros GTX 560 Ti 448SP HyperCore Graphics Card

Inno3D is among the select few with a limited-edition GeForce GTX 560 Ti 448 CUDA cores, the Hong Kong-based company launched its GTX 560 Ti 448SP HyperCore graphics card. The card features an in-house GF110 board design by Inno3D, and a new custom design single-fan cooler. Based on the 40 nm GF110 GPU, it features 448 CUDA cores, and 1280 MB of GDDR5 memory over a 320-bit memory interface. It features slightly overclocked speeds over reference speeds; 760 MHz core, 1520 MHz CUDA cores, against reference speeds of 732/1464 MHz. The memory clock sticks to specifications, at 950 MHz (3.80 GHz effective). Like every other GTX 560 Ti 448, this card will be available in limited quantities, and only in select North American and European markets.

Galaxy GeForce GTX 550 Ti Display4 Graphics Card Pictured

Here are the first pictures of Galaxy's GeForce GTX 550 Ti Display4 graphics card, designed exclusively for Asian markets. As its name might suggest, it is a GeForce GTX 550 Ti based graphics card designed to support up to four displays. The card uses an IDT VMM 1403 display output logic chip that lets it effectively make use of the total resolution the GPU supports. The redesigned display logic supports a total resolution of 5760 x 1080. Spread across four displays, you get 1440 x 1080 per display, or spread it across three displays to get 1920 x 1080 per display. Apart from four DVI connectors, its output logic makes room for a mini-HDMI connector.

NVIDIA GeForce 410M

The NVIDIA GeForce 410M is an entry level dedicated laptop graphics card. It is based on the GF119 core, which is related to the Fermi architecture but features only half of the available cores (24/48). It supports DirectX 11 and OpenGL 4.0.
The performance should be not better compared to the integrated Intel HD Graphics 3000 in the new Sandy Bridge processors. The only advantage of the 410M are the better graphic drivers by Nvidia.

Nvidia Refreshes Mobile Graphics with GTX 580M

Nvidia and Alienware have a history of cooperating to build chunky laptops with beastly graphics processing power, and that partnership rages on in 2011 with Nvidia’s latest “fastest notebook GPU ever.” The GTX 580M has supplanted the once-supreme GTX 485M and boasts six times the tesselation performance of AMD’s Radeon 6970M, or so says Nividia. The GTX 580M pumps out 1080p graphics with 384 CUDA cores, a clock speed that tops out at 1240MHz and room for 2GB of GDDR5 memory.

Let’s compare the specifications of the SLI tandem with those of top-end single- and dual-processor solutions available on the market.

As you can see, the GeForce GTX 580 SLI configuration differs from the GeForce GTX 590 in clock rates only, yet this difference is significant: 772/1544 MHz against 608/1215 MHz. It leads to an advantage in texture-mapping performance and fill rate. The SLI tandem is inferior to the Radeon HD 6990 in the former parameter, but the Cayman chip’s advanced texture-mapping subsystem often proves to be redundant in gaming tests anyway. The GeForce GTX 580 SLI specs are all about big numbers, including power consumption. When you see “2x244 watts”, you can understand why the clock rates of the GeForce GTX 590 are reduced to 608/1215 MHz.
Thus, this SLI tandem has only two downsides: price and bulkiness. However, these are not going to bother wealthy enthusiasts who assemble their systems in huge computer cases. The question is how faster the GeForce GTX 580 SLI is going to be in comparison with the GeForce GTX 590 and Radeon HD 6990 in games.

AMD Officially Launched the Radeon HD 6450

Best Gaming Graphic Card Today :ATI or NVIDIA?

Not many people know that ATI Technologies is an almost ten years older company than NVIDIA. While some fifteen years ago the collegial competition between these two companies was superfluous at best, being that there were other companies with graphic cards of comparable quality, there is an outright war between the Canadian based ATI and American, or more accurately, Californian based NVIDIA. ATI with their Radeon line and NVIDIA with their GeForce compete for the gamers market and there are no holds barred.


It is seemingly all in your allies that keeps the game going, one of NVIDIA’s founders quit AMD to start the company, AMD acquired ATI some six years ago. Microsoft and Nintendo hired ATI to create the graphics core for their game consoles, Intel licenses the NVIDIA technology, Sony Playstation 3 has NVIDIA chips in there and in one interesting turn of events, now the Xbox, Microsoft’s game console features NVIDIA processors as well. NVIDIA provides N-Force chipsets for motherboards, which feature AMD processors, but feature onboard ATI graphics.

Who produces the best graphic card nowadays, ATI or NVIDIA? 

That would largely depend on whom you ask. Many benchmark tests have either the one or the other company’s flagship best in this or that test, but the numbers speak for themselves. Namely, NVIDIA has an overall market share with PC gaming population that surpasses the magical 50% mark, while ATI manages to grab a third of the worldwide share. The fact of the matter is that you can play any and all games with either top grade card.


ATI proudly announces that the current flagship, the AMD Radeon HD™ 6990 is supposed to be the fastest gaming graphic card in the world. It is written in small letters, though, that the excellence is valid only for the 3DMark test performed in February. While the current NVIDIA flagship, the GeForce GTX 590 does not claim similar excellence, the entered specs seemingly outperform the ones listed by ATI’s card.


Are you really getting the best? 

It is all moot, though, because the manufacturer-produced cards are not the best versions available to the public. The modified versions, manufactured by Gainward and the likes, which can be overclocked and are modified to perform faster, these cards put all the numbers on either site to shame. At such high levels of tweaking, every single item that you have in your gaming computer is a factor that has a vital impact on your final performance.

It all comes down to IF 

If your main processor is not top of the line, if your computer bus is not the fastest, if your RAM is not the fastest, if your connections to the monitor are not the fastest, if your just recently downloaded driver is not the fastest, if your operating system is not tweaked to insanity, and there are perhaps a thousand more ifs, then the computer aficionado next door might just outperform you with his machine. Not to say that in a week or two, a completely new set of cards is being released and who knows what happens then.

Current Best Graphics Cards For The Money on May 2011

This month we discuss AMD's Radeon HD 6570 and 6670, dish the truth on the company's Radeon HD 6750 and 6770, and point out an impressive online deal that might save you a significant amount of cash if you're buying a graphics card in the near future!
Despite the flood of graphics card launches we reported in last month's update, two more models were introduced on April 19th: the Radeon HD 6570 and 6670. Both of these cards use the new Turks GPU equipped with 480 ALUs, 24 texture units, and eight ROPs. You may notice that this is a slight upgrade compared to AMD's Radeon HD 5570/5670's 400 ALU, 20 texture unit, and eight ROP configuration. And, and since the new cards run at similar clock rates, game performance is only marginally improved over the older products.
AMD Radeon 6990
There are a handful of superficial additions, though. For instance, the UVD3 engine proves to be very effective, and the 6570/6670 cards provide the same high-definition video quality enhancements as higher-end Radeon cards, as demonstrated by the HQV 2.0 benchmark results we generated. In any case, gamers won't be impressed with the current price points of these new cards: at ~£59 the Radeon HD 6570 DDR3 performs far below the closely priced Radeon HD 5670 (between £60 and £70), and the ~£75 Radeon HD 6670 is priced far too close to the superior Radeon HD 5750 and GeForce GTS 450. The Radeon HD 6670 has one thing going for it, though: it is the most powerful reference card available that does not require a dedicated PCIe power cable, and as such it gains an honourable mention for upgraders who don't want to spend money on a power supply. There are two other new products that you might see at retail: The Radeon HD 6750 and 6770. Unfortunately, these aren't new at all. They're simply re-branded Radeon HD 5750 and 5770 cards. That's not to say they're bad buys at the right price, but it's important to note that they do not offer Radeon HD 6000-series features like UVD3 or the ability to accelerate Blu-ray 3D playback over HDMI. Re-badging a product for marketing purposes is something we're never happy to see because of the confusion it can create, so hopefully this is a one-off slip-up, and not the start of a trend at AMD.
Powercolor HD 6850 Silent
While we try to keep our recommendations generic, occasionally a specific deal comes to our attention that we feel needs mentioning: Sapphire's Radeon HD 5850 Xtreme can be had on Overclockers for £108 right now, and should perform on par with the ~£160 Radeon HD 6870. We're not sure how long this deal will last, but if you're considering a Radeon HD 6870 or GeForce GTX 560 Ti, this Sapphire card will save you a lot of money, assuming it's around when you go to look for it.

Chris Angelini On High-End Cards

I have, for a while now, thought about taking retrospective looks at graphics card launches with the intention of keeping AMD and Nvidia more honest. Ahead of a big debut, both companies will scramble to slice their prices or devise new overclocked SKUs that better position one against the other.
There's all of this frenzied jockeying, and then nothing. Nobody follows up to make sure those aggressive tactics were really in the best interest of you, the gamer.
Well, the Radeon HD 6990 and GeForce GTX 590 launches were particularly heated (in more ways than one). So I thought I'd circle back to see how the two competitors are faring with regard to pricing and availability. Almost not surprisingly, there isn't a single GeForce GTX 590 for sale, though you can get in line for one if you're alright spending $750 on it. Radeon HD 6990s are a little more plentiful, which again, is hardly a surprise to me given how much noise they generate under load. But you won't find them for AMD's $700 launch price; expect to pay $730 or more.*
Given the current state of high-end graphics, I stick by the conclusions I made in both dual-GPU reviews: buy a pair of GeForce GTX 570s or two Radeon HD 6950s if you want a performance-oriented graphics subsystem. You'll get similar frame rates, you'll manage your thermals more effectively, and you'll save a boatload of money.

Some Notes About Our Recommendations

A few simple guidelines to keep in mind when reading this list:
  • This list is for gamers who want to get the most for their money. If you don’t play games, then the cards on this list are more expensive than what you really need. We've added a reference page at the end of the column covering integrated graphics processors, which is likely more apropos.
  • The criteria to get on this list are strictly price/performance. We acknowledge that recommendations for multiple video cards, such as two Radeon cards in CrossFire mode or two GeForce cards in SLI, typically require a motherboard that supports CrossFire or SLI and a chassis with more space to install multiple graphics cards. They also require a beefier power supply compared to what a single card needs, and will almost certainly produce more heat than a single card. Keep these factors in mind when making your purchasing decision. In most cases, if we have recommended a multiple-card solution, we try to recommend a single-card honourable mention at a comparable price point for those who find multi-card setups undesirable.
  • Prices and availability change on a daily basis. We can’t base our decisions on always-changing pricing information, but we can list some good cards that you probably won’t regret buying at the price ranges we suggest.
  • The list is based on some of the best U.S. prices from online retailers and localised for the UK. In other countries or at retail stores, your mileage will most certainly vary.
  • These are new card prices. No used or open-box cards are in the list; they might represent a good deal, but it’s outside the scope of what we’re trying to do.
*Editor's Note: Though Chris reports that the GeForce GTX 590 is tough to find across the pond, we actually found the GTX 590 easy enough to locate here in the UK -- it's available through Scan and Overclockers. However, it seems not all retailers have the card in stock. Dabs, for example, has it listed as "Ordered upon request." Across all three of these retailers, the average cost for this card seems to be just under £600. Similarly, the Radeon HD 6990s are readily available from online retailers, and unlike the U.S. market, are selling for (and below!) the launch price (£540).
