Ultrabook, Intel’s New Mobile Computer Generation

Intel will launch Ultrabook, a new high performance laptop with improved security features all in „thin and elegant design”, informed Sean Maloney, Intel’s Vice-President at Computex 2011.
Maloney added that the new laptop series will incorporate the best features from tablets and predicted that Ultrabooks will hold 40% of the consumer laptop market by 2012.

He also revealed that Intel is going to step up the innovation process for the Intel Atom processors which are based on SoCs chipsets and are used in netbooks, smartphones, tablet-PCs and other mobile devices. Maloney added that Intel would launch new product series every year, which would create multiple solutions for diverse market segments.
The new laptop class will combine laptops’ performance and capabilities with the tablets’ features: Ultrabook will have a faster response time and better security features all hosted in a thin, light and elegant design.

Maloney presented the three stages of Intel’s strategy for Ultrabooks – a strategy which began with the launch of the second-generation Intel Core processors. Future Ultrabooks will be less than 20mm thick and will cost around $1000. The first laptops powered by the new system will be available starting from the holiday season – ASUS UX21 Ultrabook will be the first model available on the market.

Maloney has also introduced the next-generation Intel processors, called „Ivy Bridge” based on the second generation Intel Core technology. He added that the Ivy Bridge technology will be incorporated in the PC equipments from the second half of 2012.

Ivy Bridge powered laptops will be more efficient and faster and will offer better graphics and a faster response speed. Ivy Bridge is the first high volume processor based on the 22 nm Intel technology which uses the revolutionary 3D Tri-Gate transistor. The Ivy Bridge technology will be followed by the „Haswell” technology in 2013 which aims to improve the laptop’s thermal design by reducing the processor frequency at half thus lowering the microprocessor’s energy consumption.
ASUS UX21 is powered by a CPU Core i3, i5 or i7, with 4GB RAM and 128GB SATA/drive SSD. The case is made of aluminum, and the 11-inch display has a 1366×768p resolution. The laptop weights almost a kilo (2, 2 lb) and brings mini-HDMI and USB 3.0 connections. The price tag should be less than $ 1000.
